SJIIM Shines at ISMC 2018 A group of students from SJIIM’s Elementary School recently participated in the International Singapore Maths Competition (ISMC) held at Sri KDU Schools. The ISMC had over 12,000 student competitors from 24 countries competing for individual and collective success and SJIIM was well represented with a team of 77 sitting for various tests. The tests presented some real challenges but our students persevered and shined at the same time securing 3 Golds, 6 Silvers and 17 Bronzes which placed us as the 3rd overall school in Malaysia! Tjun Eu who was one of the Gold Medal winners said, “After I found out that I had won a Gold Medal, I felt surprised, shocked and extremely happy. This was because it was a challenging test. Knowing I have achieved in this test gives me motivation to continue pushing myself in my math learning.” This is an outstanding achievement for our first year in the competition and all 77 competitors represented the school tremendously well. SJIIM Elementary School Teacher and Event Coordinator for the ISMC, Mr Scott Higgins was equally elated with the students’ performance, “It was great to get such a large number of students participating in our first year. I am really proud of how the students did and feel they have established a good platform from which we can launch from in the coming years.” With the continual guidance of SJIIM’s dedicated teachers, the future of the ISMC and Singapore Maths at SJIIM looks bright. Ora et Labora!

Our students are currently in Taiwan for a educational trip! Read about their first day here from the eyes of one of our students himself: SJIIM Taiwan Educational Trip 2018 Student Reflection Written by: Tan Kwang Wei Today was a blast! At 6.30 am, everyone including our Malaysian tour guide gathered at the information counter of KLIA 2. We were all nervous until our faces and cheeks blushed and were curious about what awaits us during this exceptional and astonishing trip. A ripple of excitement spread through us as we dashed into the plane. The plane journey took 4 hours 40 minutes and was very smooth and well flown, so much so that I had an extremely deep sleep! After we landed, we quickly assembled into a group and marched towards the immigration gate. Woo! It was intense. The further we got, the faster we moved. After clearing immigration, we were greeted by our Taiwanese tour guide and were taken to a tour bus. The weather was very cooling and enjoyable. The tour bus was very interesting as it was a double decker with the first deck being where luggage was placed and where the driver sat. The upper deck was where we sat. The bus ride was fun yet informative and we manage to learn quite a few things from our tour guide. We went past Taipei 101 as well as a tunnel that took more than 10 years to build. It took 2 hours to reach the Toucheng Leisure Farm and when we reached the farm that we will be staying for 1 night, we took our luggage and skied to our rooms! The rooms were gorgeous. Next, we went down for a BBQ dinner. It was very relaxing and fun. The last part of the 1st day was a quiet peaceful activity. We made a DIY wishing lantern which we wrote our wishes and desires on it. After this was done, we allowed it to fly and float slowly into the sky. Sadly, my group’s lantern burned and failed but thankfully some of the other groups successfully made their lanterns fly high up into the sky. We returned to our rooms to rest after that. Overall, it was quite a day and we are look forward a similarly exciting day tomorrow and for the rest of our trip.
