Industry-based projects allow students to apply their knowledge and skills to actual industrial needs identified by the industry partners themselves. Such projects create valuable experiences for the students. It is on the above premise the Faculty of Design & Built Environment (FDBE), First City University College has been constantly collaborating with its industry partners to ensure its students are industry-ready before their graduation. The recent collaboration with AVANTÉ Hotel in Bandar Utama City Centre, Petaling Jaya saw 22 students from its two programmes - Diploma in Graphic Design and Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Graphic Design, participated in a Cake Packaging and Videography Competition organised by the Hotel. The Cake Packaging Competition was organised in conjunction with Mother’s Day celebration which fell on 8 May this year. For the videography competition, students were required to produce a video showcasing the 610-room luxurious hotel with all its facilities including the pillarless Grand Ballroom and the 13 conference/meeting rooms, Saltwater infinity pool, spa and wading pool, Kiddies Club, SkyDeck, Chek’s Coffee House and others. The winners of both the competitions were announced during the prize-giving ceremony held at Chek’s Coffee House. All prizes consisting of rooms-night stay, weekend hi-tea buffets and afternoon tea sets were sponsored by AVANTÉ Hotel. 1. Mother’s Day Cake Packaging Competition - Tung Angel (1st Prize) - Angel Wang Cia Xin (2nd Prize) - Lim Yong Xin (3rd Prize) 2. Best Creative Concept (Videography Competition) - Yong Yen Ling - Tang Hui Yen - Leong Thong Hong - Liew Mei Jing 3. Best in Unique Storytelling (Videography Competition) - Cheah Kia Yee - Lim Bei Yee - Yap Ting Xuan - Teoh Jia Haur Mr David Oh, the Operations Manager of AVANTÉ Hotel was present during the prize-giving ceremony together with the team from FDBE comprising Deputy Dean, Asst. Prof Dr Debbie Gan, Asst. Prof Arthur Liaw and Thanaletchumy Shanmugam. David congratulated the students and commended their creativity for coming up with industry-standard designs. He was particularly impressed with the students’ packaging designs and gave his indication that some designs would be adopted for use not only for Mother’s Day campaign but throughout the year.
