Myopia occurs because the eyeball is too long, which results in light focusing in front of the retina. Myopia commonly onsets in childhood and is corrected using spectacles or contact lenses. The number of people with myopia is estimated to rise from 2.6 billion in 2020 to 3.4 billion in 2030 due to lifestyle changes, including reduced time spent outdoors and increased near-work activities. In 2010, just over 28% of the worldโ€™s population was affected by myopia. By 2050, about 70% of the world's population will live in urban areas, and those affected by myopia, will rise to nearly 50% in 2050. High levels of myopia (>5.00D) increase the risk of sight-threatening conditions such as retinal detachment, cataracts, glaucoma and myopic macular degeneration, which is a leading cause of blindness.
