As the new flagship cafe of Malaysian creative agency Forefront, the team behind Foremula is adept at coming up with fresh ideas and having fun experimenting, and it shows in the menu. Foremula offers a combination of local favorites and western cuisine with whimsical names like Lala Land, Crabby Patty, Kambing For You and Ofishally Spicy.
The cafe, located in Dana 1 Commercial Centre, a quiet commercial district in Ara Damansara, is popular with the office and college crowd. The interior is bright and airy with large windows and hanging potted plants. The furniture and lightings have a white, beige and bronze colour theme, with copper cutlery to add to the overall classy yet casual ambience.
It's a lively place where you can hang out to eat, drink and laugh with your friends. There is an alfresco dining area which is useful, as the inside gets filled up rather quickly during lunch time.
We asked the waitress about the latest additions to the menu, and decided to order the new starter TGI - Fryday! (RM13); a big cheerful bowl of sweet potato fries and skin-on fries sprinkled with curry-flavoured parmesan cheese, served with a side of tangy chilli lime mayonnaise. It’s great to munch on these cheesy fries and chat while waiting for your mains to arrive. The portions served here are rather generous, so think twice before ordering more. Even when shared between two people, you may struggle to finish the fries. We couldn’t finish ours.
Next, we ordered Smokin' Thighs (RM23) for our main. It's a clever deconstruction of the classic satay - instead of grilled chicken meat on skewers, we were served with grilled marinated whole chicken thigh, complete with diced red onions, cucumber and Foremula's own savoury peanut satay sauce. If that isn't filling enough, it comes with sweet potato fries on the side.
The dish is scrumptious. The chicken thigh is very juicy and perfectly cooked after marination in local spices, and the chicken skin has that slightly charred taste which we like. The satay sauce is very flavourful and packed with the sweet crunch of roasted peanuts. It marries well with the chicken and totally elevates the dish as a whole. Every forkful of the tender chicken, cucumber and onion dipped in the satay sauce gave us that same flavour sensation of eating satay!
We also had the much raved about Just My Lak-sa (RM18). (Fair warning - if you want to try this popular dish, be sure to come early or it will be all sold out.) Okay, how do we begin to describe this laksa? It is absolutely deeelicious! We promise you, it's the best laksa we've eaten in ages. It tastes very much like Penang Assam Laksa, except for a few inspired twists, such as replacing thick rice noodles with capelline pasta, and having a broth filled with tuna flakes instead of mackerel.
The thick laksa broth is infused with mildly spiced coconut cream and it gives off that fragrant aroma of tamarind (asam) juice and lemongrass. It's cooked with traditional laksa ingredients such as fresh galangal, Vietnamese coriander, ginger flower, onions, red chilli and mint leaves; topped with a lovely sunny-side-up-egg. We finished this mouthwatering and addictive laksa in no time, leaving behind a very clean bowl!
Our satisfying meal was perfectly complemented with a cup of hot Matcha Latte (RM12) and an iced Houjicha Latte (RM13). Both drinks are really nice. The Matcha Latte is very smooth and creamy, while the Houjicha Latte is a great thirst quencher.
If you're pining for some good hearty food with a contemporary twist, head over to Foremula to sample their menu. We definitely think this cafe is off to a great start!
