The checkerboard print was first introduced in the late ‘70s after Steve Van Doren, son of the Vans founder, noticed kids drawing the checkerboard pattern across the sidewalls of their shoes. He then brought the patterns to live by working with great designers and thus decades later the Checkerboard Slip-On became very popular amongst sneakerheads like us!
To add a fresh new spin to the already popular checkerboard pattern, Vans designers gave the silhouette a new “mix check” in their new Vans Mixed Checkerboard Footwear Collection. The new mix pattern consist of both large and small-scale checkers across the body of the shoe.
The Mixed Checkerboard Footwear comes with toe-caps to help ease friction against the footwear and rubber waffle outsoles for a soft and comfortable fit while also remaining durable for everyday wear and tear.
To bring in variety, Vans has designed the footwear collection in two shoe styles; Old Skool and Classic Slip-On.
The Old Skool style uses traditional black suede quarter panels and a leather white side stripe that splits the quarter panel of each style allowing for two Checkerboard variations.
For a true remix on the model that first debuted over 41 years ago, the Classic Slip-On has macro-sized checks on the vamp with micro-checks along the quarter-panel
