Have an Eggcellent time at Omulab!

Whether you are an albumen (egg white) lover or a vitellus (egg yolk) lover, all serious egg lovers should be delighted to know that there's a new specialty omurice cafe in town. Omulab is a newly opened Japanese cafe in Section 17, owned by Slurp! Café located in the same vicinity.

The word "omurice" is a mash-up of omelette and rice - as "omu" means omelette in Japanese. Omurice cafes have popped up all over in Japan, and now Malaysians get to join in on the trend too. Omulab touts itself as the 1st Japanese omurice speciality cafe in Malaysia.

As we all know, making the perfect omelette requires some real skills. It is all too easy to burn an omelette, and often times, it is difficult to cook an omelette that has a perfectly smooth consistency. Let's be honest here - how many times have we tried to cook an omelette but clumsily created a huge mess instead? So, we at LoopTalk were quite excited to visit Omulab to ogle at the omelettes prepared by the professionals.

There are 6 choices of omurice in the menu, which are: Sensei Kare, Tomato Army, Master Demiglace, Mentaiko Guru, Black & White, and the new entry - the Double Omurice. After pouring over the menu and peeking at what the other diners were having, we ordered the Master Demiglace and the Double Omurice.

The Master Demiglace (RM20.5) is presented as a gloriously formed omelette (shaped like a baguette), placed on top of the fried rice, with a generous amount of demiglace sauce on the side. The waitress helpfully offered to cut open the omelette for us, and voila! It unfolded neatly to cover up almost the entire plate.

What's impressive is the omelette was still soft and gooey on the inside. The fried rice had minced beef tossed in and the demiglace sauce was very flavourful and slightly zesty; it tasted like a real beef gravy. Yummylicious! This is a hearty dish with a good balance of protein (omelette and minced beef), carbs (fried rice) and some vegetables too. Fun fact: eggs are rich in protein and also contain B-complex vitamins, essential for cell metabolism and brain development.

If you want a little something extra to go with your omurice, there are 9 add ons that you can choose from: cheese, korokke (potato & vegetable croquet), sauteed vegetables, pan fried dory, fried/ grilled chicken chop, tori karaage, tempura ebi, beef slice or hamburg steak with cheese. However, we found the Master Demiglace filling enough on its own.

Okay, egg AND cheese addicts would go absolutely gaga over the Double Omurice (RM21.5). The dish is presented to look like a yellow submarine on a sea of melted blue cheese. The omelette completely envelops the fried rice, and you'd have to cut the omelette in the middle to 'release' the fried rice inside with the gooey eggy goodness. And it flows out, like a river of gold. What a beautiful sight!

The blue cheese sauce in the Double Omurice is intensely cheesy, and it enhances the wafu fried rice beautifully, wrapping every morsel of rice with its richness. There are also sliced tempura mushrooms in the fried rice. In terms of taste, this Double Omurice dish is more subtle than the Master Demiglace, but we liked how the blue cheese sauce and the eggs complimented each other.

As for desserts, we had the Warabimochi (RM7); a jelly-like dessert with Kinako, drizzled with caramelized brown sugar syrup. We fell in love with it immediately once we took a bite of it, as it delighted our taste buds! The plus point for this dessert was the gooey, wobbly, elastic and chewy texture of the Warabimochi. Mmm...so good!

Lastly, we soothed our palates with a pot of Paris Tea (RM10). This fruity black tea is infused with bergamot and contains no sugar. Sniff into your teacups before you take a sip of the tea, as the aroma of this tea is simply wonderful! If you ask us personally, this tea is perfect for a rainy afternoon day - it keeps you warm, settled and gives you a sense of refreshment.

The consensus - we had high hopes for Omulab, and we were not let down as the dishes were perfectly executed and are lovely sights to behold. So if you're having a craving for some Japanese fusion dishes with eggy goodness, head on over to Omulab for a dining experience that will surely brighten up your day!
