Jom try myBurgerLab's Nasi Lemak Ayam Rendang Burger
by Melina M.

Malaysians over here could only drool and were feeling a wee bit jealous because McDonald’s Malaysia didn’t have it. Thus, myBurgerLab swiftly launched its own version of the Nasi Lemak Ayam Rendang Burger as a tribute to our National Day. After all, Malaysians take fierce patriotic pride in our classic local food and we love to show that what our dear Singaporean neighbours can do, we Malaysians can also do as well (if not better!). A little friendly competition is a good thing!

As one of the last people not to have eaten the Nasi Lemak Burger, how could we resist visiting myBurgerLab? We really wanted to find out if the burger lived up to its hype. So we dropped in myBurgerLab in Sunway as it is more spacious than the Seapark outlet and the queue isn’t quite as crazy there.

First off, we ordered the Nacho Libre (RM14.90) for our appetizer. The portion is big enough for two people to share. It’s made of BBQ flavoured Chachos topped with sloppy chicken and jalapenos, drizzled over with cheese sauce and green salsa. It’s a great snack, very flavourful and light.

Next, we had a beef burger with an unusual twist, aptly named Jammin with Elvis (RM18.90 for single patty, RM25.90 for double patty). It’s a burger unlike any other you’ve tasted before; a 120g juicy beef patty spread with a generous dollop of peanut butter and blueberry jam, plus caramelised onions. Look, if you love peanut butter and jam sandwiches, then this burger is a must-try. Its weird combination of sweet and savoury flavours may not suit everybody’s tastes, but it works for us!

Then we had to try the infamous Ultraman 3.0 (RM19.80). Now, if you are wondering why it’s called The Ultraman, that’s because Ultraman in Cantonese is “Ham Tan Chew Yan”, which literally means Salted Egg Superman. This burger features a crispy chicken thigh topped with salted egg yolk buttermilk sauce, infused with cili padi and blended curry leaf. The salted egg yolk sauce really enhances the taste of the chicken patty. We rate this burger quite highly!

The burger came as part of a set meal together with one side order and a bottomless soda for an extra RM7.80. For the side order, we chose the Umami Mashed Potato (RM4.80), made with real potatoes mashed with peppered beef bonito gravy. It’s simply yummylicious!

Finally, we had the much anticipated Nasi Lemak Ayam Rendang Burger (RM18.80). This burger is myBurgerLab’s version of the Nasi Lemak; a popular coconut rice served with fried anchovies (ikan bilis), cucumbers, fried peanuts, an egg and fried chicken.

The Nasi Lemak Ayam Rendang Burger features a battered piece of chicken thigh spread with peanut butter, rendang paste and sambal, sprinkled with finely chopped ikan bilis and pickled Japanese cucumbers, and topped with a sunny side up egg. All the elements are layered harmoniously together inside a pair of black charcoal buns made from rice flour.

Wow! We were really impressed with the Nasi Lemak Ayam Rendang Burger. It truly captures the essence of the Nasi Lemak dish. In terms of flavours, it’s totally spot on. The burger is very spicy and utterly delicious. Also, it comes in a generous portion, which makes it value for money. If you are the type who can’t get enough of Nasi Lemak, this burger will certainly satisfy your cravings!

The burger came with Awesome Fries (RM4.80) on the side. The fries are seasoned with fresh rosemary and thyme, served with a special sauce (fun fact: the owner found the recipe for the sauce through a Google search – “best sauce to go with fries”).

Lastly, we had the 'Molten Vanilla' Brownie (RM14.90). It’s a sinful dessert of warm triple choc brownie topped with 3 scoops of vanilla ice cream and drizzled with lots of Hershey's Choc Sauce. The taste is totally heavenly!

Bottomline, if you are seeking a unique burger experience and want to give the Nasi Lemak Ayam Rendang Burger a try, do visit myBurgerLab! The burger will be available until 31 December 2017 due to popular demand.

You can find myBurgerLab Sunway at no.3, Jalan PJS 11/9, Bandar Sunway, 46150, Petaling Jaya, Selangor. They are open every day from 11:00am to 10:15pm, except the 1st Monday of every month. Just head on over and satisfy your Nasi Lemak Ayam Rendang Burger cravings now!
