Marco Creative Cuisine is one such fine example of bistronomy. Launched at 1Utama Shopping Centre about a year ago, the restaurant is owned by Chef Daren Leong who spent many years in Singapore honing his culinary skills at Miam Miam and Franco, among other F&B establishments. As French fine dining is a bit too pricey for the average Malaysian, Daren aims to excite the Malaysian restaurant scene by serving modern French cuisine at affordable prices.
Even if you were just passing by in the shopping mall, you would notice this restaurant with its elegant and soothing colour theme of beige, Tiffany blue and copper gold. The most eye-catching part of the decor is without doubt the aquarium display at the front of the restaurant - illuminated with captivating jellyfish in electric colours. Shoppers would stop in front of the aquarium just to gaze at the mesmerizing floating jellyfish for a minute or two, and take a quick selfie.
Marco Creative Cuisine specializes in giving its patrons a journey of flavours and textures to delight their palates. The menu changes every 6 months or so, using the best of local home-grown produce to create imaginative dishes with flair using Western-inspired techniques. It offers a multi-course meal at RM98 per guest (which includes your choice of entrée, main course, dessert and drink), and also an ala carte menu. The spacious restaurant seats a capacity of 62 people. It can get quite busy on weekends, so it might be wise to make a reservation before you visit the restaurant.
We opted for the ala carte menu. The choice of entrées looked quite tempting to us, particularly the Foie Gras Snow (RM25) and the Spanish Board (RM48). The Foie Gras Snow incorporates shaved duck foie gras with lychee, wine jelly and apple chips; if you've never tasted foie gras, this is a must-have starter that is luxuriously enticing. The Spanish Board is a mouthwatering smorgasbord of jamon serrano, chorizo, salchichon, fruit, nuts, pickles and cheese; perfect for sharing.
However, we preferred to have soup instead as we wanted something light and warm to awaken our palates. We eyed both the Aromatic Chicken Consomme (RM20) and the Truffled Mushroom Soup (RM15). The former is a consomme of chicken broth infused with aromatic herbs and spices, while the latter is a smooth creamy blend of brown mushroom jus, Shiitake puree and truffle oil. Since the Aromatic Chicken Consomme was not available at the time, we only ordered the Truffled Mushroom Soup.
Oh wow, we really enjoyed the soup! It was rich and creamy, with a deep earthy flavour. The truffle oil added a touch of luxury to elevate this ambrosial soup. Every spoonful of the soup made our palates sing with joy; a perfect appetizer in anticipation of the main courses to come.
For our main courses, we ordered the Smoked Duck Breast (RM35) and the Pork Rib Eye Steak (RM48).
The Smoked Duck Breast looked scrumptious and it was beautifully executed. The duck was cooked sous vide and cut into equal bite-sized portions. Drag your fork with the duck through the sultry blackberry gastrique; it tastes absolutely divine. This smoked duck breast with a crispy skin was much more tender and succulent than the Chinese roast duck that we usually ate. It was accompanied by a medley of spring vegetables; sauteed puy lentils, baby carrots, romanesco and asparagus.
The other main course we had, the Pork Rib-Eye Steak, was equally sensational. A generous slab of 250-gram pork cooked sous vide, each bite of the rib-eye steak provided a forkful of flavour. The slightly seared exterior sealed in the juiciness of the steak. We loved the herb butter sauce that accompanied the steak; it was velvety, aromatic and made the dish sing even more. There are 3 side options for this dish - fresh greens, pan roasted vegetables or truffle fries. We chose the locally produced garden-fresh greens for a nutritionally balanced dish.
We definitely had a memorable time at Marco Creative Cuisine, and would heartily recommend this place to people who enjoy French fine dining but do not want to hurt their wallets too much. Heck, we would happily return to Marco just to have the Truffled Mushroom Soup again!
