6DoF basically stands for 6 Degrees of Freedom and deals with tracking your position and orientation (forward, backward, up, down, left, right, turning, etc.). Making use of Apple’s ARKit and Google’s ARCore technology, the 6Dof Blaster allows you to physically walk around in the real world untethered to control what you’re doing in the virtual world as opposed to just standing in one spot, looking and spinning around in a circle (yes, we are talking about you Occulus and HTC)
Constructed out of plastic and looking like something that stepped out of a Rick and Morty episode, the 6Dof Blaster is a futuristic purple and lime-green accented toy gun with a main trigger and 3 additional buttons that controls different functionalities in different games; like jumping, zooming, bullet time, reloading etc.
Think of the 6DoF Blaster as a tactile accessory and not a stand-alone toy, as the games will be loaded on your smartphone and not in the gun. All you have to do is mount your smartphone on the clip rail and launch the games to play. Even without fully encompassing your view like a headset or googles, the 6DoF Blaster is fun and immersive. We guarantee your eyes will be locked on to your smartphone screen as you wave the gun around.
Ok so this thing is not exactly as cool as the full-on effects of a true VR headset like the Rift or Vive but it is definitely not as dorky looking either, seeing that you do not need to flail and totter around the room with a box strapped to your face.
For now, the slated launch for the 6DoF Blaster is around Summer 2018. So how much will it set you back, you ask? About USD40 (RM155+-) and it will come in even more color combinations as well. We will not worry about the longevity of the 6Dof Blaster as Merge has plans to open up the accompanying app ecosystem to outside developers to come up with more cool stuff for you to toy with soon. For just RM155+-, we can see no easier and fun entry into the world of AR/VR than the 6DoF Blaster.
OK, it was fun while it lasted but I guess it's time to sweep aside the Nerf bullets in the office. 6DoF Blaster, here we come!
