GoPro has long been the king of the action camera market but there’s a new kid on the block from Sony that could usurp the former’s position or at least bring something different to the game. So does the Sony RX0 have the guts to be the new leader of the pack? Does it bring anything different and innovative to the table? Let’s find out…
Small Camera, Big Possibilities
The RX0 is a tiny camera even by action camera standard but its packing some pretty big features. At a glance, it might not look like Sony will be able to put much into the RX0 but trust us when we say that for something this size, it is packed to the gills with some pretty great features.
Coming in at only 110g and measuring just 59 x 40 x 30mm, the RX0 is smaller and lighter than all the current action cameras in the market. The RX0 is built flushed, there is no protuding lenses or viewfinders, making it a very compact little camera that you can mount almost anywhere you want.
A 1.5in LCD display on the back allows photos and videos viewing on the fly and also lets you cycle through the many different modes and settings.
High technology for high-quality imaging inherited from its siblings in the RX series is packed into the uniquely solid, rigid, compact body. A 1.0-inch 15.6MP Exmore RS CMOS sensor is tasked with capturing videos in various modes, even super-slow-motion of 1000fps at 1080p.
The Zeiss Tessar T 24 mm f/4 fixed wide angle lens captures still images in raw and JPEG formats, with shutter speed up to 1/32,000 seconds and 16fps.
The construction of the Sony RX0 is also extremely rugged. It’s waterproof down to 10m without underwater housing, shockproof to impact drops to the ground from heights of up to 2m and crushproof under weights up to 200kg.
While the RX0 might be reasonably tough, at the end of the day Sony is not really marketing it as an action camera. According to them, the RX0 is targeted towards people looking to record high-quality 4k photos and videos in challenging environments.
Multiple RX0s can be slaved together with its proprietary multi-camera system and accessories to capture photos and videos from multiple angles. With Sony PlayMemories app installed on your smartphone, you can connect 5 cameras together but with the Sony FA-WRC1M remote, 15 cameras can be linked together in sync.
Check out the video below for a quick recap on the RX0’s features.
Small-sized and all-around versatility in the RX0 allows you the freedom to take and use RX0 anywhere anytime in creative ways. So how much, you ask? Well hold on to your hats folks, the RX0 can be yours for roughly RM4,300.
If you are interested to have a hands-on session to fiddle with it or straight up purchase this pint-size wonder, the RX0 will be available very soon at all Sony Centre outlets near you.
