The owners of this new restaurant in TTDI are Alicia and Derson, a young couple (hence the name 'Alison'), who came to live in KL for work and found themselves eating out all the time food that was not very nutritious and high in MSG content. So, they were inspired to start Alison Food House to prepare wholesome food using their mothers' delicious home-cooked recipes, adding a twist of their own.
The restaurant is located on the first floor of a row of shops in TTDI, directly above a mini-mart. The interior is cosy and bright, with lots of potted plants, wooden tables and clean white walls.
Another interesting aspect of Alison Soup House is that it is pet-friendly, so you might come here for a meal with your furkids after taking a stroll around the neighborhood.
The specialty here is a variety of broths simmered for 15 hours, with fresh and healthy ingredients that are antibiotic-free and MSG-free. Many of these soups are familiar to us who grew up drinking them - like the Honey Dates ABC Soup, White Pepper Pork Soup, and Yellow Wine Ginger Chicken Soup.
Aside from the nourishing soups, there are also non-soup dishes on the menu such as their Signature Pork Satay, Hainanese Chicken and Nyonya Braised Pork.
We visited Alison Soup House on a rainy day (perfect for drinking soup!) and tried their Lunch Specials. Each set meal comes with multigrain rice or hand-made mee sua, and includes a free herbal tea.
The first thing we ordered was the Signature 7 Treasure Herbal Soup (RM21.90). This is a wonderfully nutritious brew with red dates, goji berries, Yu Zhu, Dang Sheng, rhizome dioscoreae, soy beans and barley.
It's served with a side dish of pork belly, fresh vegetables and egg. The pork is very tender (it is barley-fed and antibiotic-free), and it goes well with the soup and multigrain rice.
The bowl of soup is large and it has a comforting, fragrant aroma of Chinese herbs. Every sip of soup, rich with ingredients, brought back warm memories of the amazing broths that our mothers and grandmothers lovingly made for us when we were growing up.
Another soup we ordered was the Honey Dates ABC Soup (RM20.90). It also comes with a side dish of pork belly, vegetables and egg, plus multigrain rice.
Remember that all their soups are slow cooked for 15 hours, ensuring that the essence from all the nutritious ingredients and bones of the pork are fully infused into the soup. The Honey Dates ABC soup is very flavourful and has a sweet aftertaste from the corn, radish, carrots and honey dates. Therefore, we think this vibrant broth is best for children. Mom and dad, order this soup so that you don't have to mull over what's for desserts later!
Last but not least, we ordered the Bak Kut Teh (RM24.90). It's brewed with 100% real herbs for that rich authentic flavour. It comes with a serving of pork ribs, tofu pok, enoki mushroom and vegetables, plus multigrain rice.
So what did we think of the Bak Kut Teh? We loved it! Again, each spoonful of the broth leaves a pleasant, but mildly discernible fragrant aftertaste at the tip of the tongue. Meat lovers will be thrilled at the generous amount of pork chunks served, which makes for a very satisfying meal. The leftover herbs and ingredients used are tender and edible, which is an added bonus for those who love to leave behind a clean bowl.
For your information, the Lunch Specials are available on weekdays from 11am to 2pm, with various lunch sets (inclusive of free herbal tea) priced between RM16.90 - RM20.90. All the lunch sets we ordered here are priced RM18.90 per set.
Overall, we adore the concept of Alison Soup House. It's a great place to eat for the health conscious, and for those who need their soup cravings fixed. If you want to be energized by nutritious, unpretentious, homemade food prepared using the freshest and finest ingredients, you won't be disappointed here.
