Wizards At Tribeca: Presenting Gratifying Food with a Magical Touch
by Melina M.

We went to visit the place for brunch with much anticipation after hearing rave reviews about its creative offerings. Knowing that the same team behind renowned eateries The Red Beanbag and Yellow Brick Road had set up Wizards At Tribeca, just brought our expectations up a whole notch.

The restaurant was opened early this year on the ground floor of a new service-suite tower on Jalan Imbi, right in Kuala Lumpur's Golden Triangle where 5-star hotels, towering skyscrapers and world-class shopping malls stand proudly together on prime real estate.

Clearly, word had gotten out about this place, because there was a bunch of people dressed in trendy clothes waiting outside the front door when we arrived. They were relaxed and chatty, waiting for their turn to be called in by the waiter. We added our names to the long waiting list and finally got a place to sit 45 minutes later. So, we strongly recommend you to call ahead of time and make a reservation before you come here, especially on weekends.

Wizards At Tribeca has an airy, bright and contemporary design. It looks completely different from its sister restaurants - The Red Beanbag and Yellow Brick Road, but shares the same relaxed atmosphere, with the appealing smell of coffee wafting through the air and the buzz of happy chatter in the background coming from other diners. Lots of natural sunlight pours inside the spacious restaurant, and there is also an alfresco dining area at the front.

One of the highlights of Wizards At Tribeca is definitely their Specialty Brunch menu, offered from 10am until 6pm daily. The description of the ingredients in the menu reminded us of the extravagant Melbourne brunches we had - you know, full on big breakfast with crispy bacon and hash browns, pancakes with syrup, sunny-side up eggs on french toast - yummy! After a heavy brunch in Melbourne, you just want to lay on the grass in a park and do nothing. But we digress.

After browsing through the menu, we ordered the Eggs Royale (RM30); it is composed of Wizard's lightly smoked salmon, poached eggs, crispy kale and avocado with hollandaise sauce on brioche bun.

This breakfast dish was very flavourful and all the ingredients had their shining moments. We really liked the crispy kale, it was like eating vegetable crisps. Salty at the first bite, with a slightly bitter aftertaste - the crispy kale gives a delightfully contrasting texture to the smoked salmon and soft runny eggs. Also, the bonito flakes sprinkled on top had an earthy aroma that ties in well with the dish. We found this dish absolutely satisfying and delicious. So much so, that we polished up the whole plate in no time!

We also ordered Pulled Beef Tagliatelle (RM30); a slow braised pulled beef tagliatelle, served with mushrooms and parmesan chips. This dish evokes the intricate flavors of Italy. The pasta was cooked al dente, while the beef was tender and flavourful. It was marinated and cooked perfectly, so that the meat flavour was sealed in the tasty gravy. The delicately light parmesan chips added a touch of saltiness and melted easily into the pasta. We really enjoyed the hearty confluence of flavours in the pulled beef tagliatelle; it tastes even better than it looks!

Another specialty at Wizards of Tribeca is their coffees and cocktails. Coffee lovers must try the coffees here as they have two of Malaysia's award-winning baristas running the place, so you really can't go wrong with this one.

It’s a good idea to order their coffee tasting platter (RM17) if you want to sample their coffees. The Cascara Soda (RM18) is also a popular drink; it's a refreshing thirst quencher made with Panama Geisha cascara, white peach syrup, lime and thyme. You could also have a Hot Chocolate (RM16) by Chocolate Concierge, with bold or fruity options for your chocolate. We had the fruity chocolate and instantly fell in love. It was very rich, chocolatey and smooth, with slightly acidic notes. It's the perfect drink to sip on and watch the world go by on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Forget counting your calories for the moment - we say a proper brunch would not be complete without desserts!

We ordered the Chocolate Molten (RM24); a beautifully presented plate of Maracaibo 65% Criollo Chocolate from Venezuela served with a dollop of vanilla ice cream and red berries compote. This cake is sinfully indulgent! Cut into the cake and gooey hot cocoa flows out, like molten lava. The red berries compote marries well with the vanilla ice cream, hitting all the right sweet notes. The light coconut shavings and thin caramelized sugar wafer add another dimension to this exquisite dessert.

Overall, we had a memorable time at Wizards At Tribeca and can honestly say that we enjoyed everything that we ordered there. It is definitely a place worth revisiting, only this time we'll remember to make reservations before we go! It is a little pricey compared to some other eateries, but that is to be expected due to its prime location and reputation. The food quality, attentive service and elegant ambience makes it worth the trip.
